Abilify
Generic name for this medication is Aripiprazole. It comes in powder form for injections and tablet form. It is an atypical antipsychotic for treatment of schizophrenia and also bipolar disorder mixed and manic episodes.
Precautions:
• Injection is not for IV or SC use it is only for IM use
.
• It cannot be used for treatment of dementia, suicide risk, hepatic impairment, seizure history, cardiovascular disease, hypertension extreme heat exposure, drug induced, leucopenia, and neutropenia history.
• Monitor for tardive dyskinesia, NMS, akathisia, hyperglycaemia symptoms; diabetes, aspiration pneumonia.
Adverse reaction:
Fatigue, injection site reactions, weight change; decrease appetite; extrapyramidal symptoms eg akathisia, headache, sedation, somnolence, tremor, anxiety, insomnia, psychotic disorder, restlessness, neutropenia, dystonia, prolonged QT; orthostatic hypotension, hyperglycaemia, diabetes, CNS disturbance, tardive dyskinesia, seizure, oesophageal dysmotility, aspiration, suicide ideation, hepatitis and pancreatitis.
Interaction:
They can interact with CNS drugs, antihypertensive, anticholinergic, strong CYP2D6 (e.g. quinidine, fluoxetine, paroxetine, bupropion), strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g. ketoconazole, itraconazole, HIV protease inhibitors), inducers (e.g. carbamazepine, rifampicin, rifabutin, phenytoin, phenobarbitone, primidone, efavirenz, nevirapine, St John's wort) drugs causing QT prolongation and electrolyte imbalance.
As injection powder they come in 300mg and 400mg packs.
As tablets they come in 5mg, 10mg, 15mg, 20mg and 30mg pack.
